HMSA/Blue Cross Blue Shield or UHA

Maui Lani Physicians and Surgeons. If a pregnant person is choosing dual care (birthing at home and care from an ob/gyn), MLPS will see the pregnant patient until 29 weeks, then they will no longer be able to provide care due to their malpractice insurance policies. If a patient does not tell them they plan to birth at home and receive care with them until the baby is born, and the baby is born at home intentionally, they will no longer see that patient henceforth.

Malama I Ke Ola Health Center. This center also takes Quest. If a pregnant person plans to birth at home and share this with the team there, they will promptly deny that person any further care and will refuse to see them as a patient for future pregnancies and women's care. They do have a Certified Nurse Midwife on staff.

Quest

If you don't have insurance, you can apply for insurance via Quest (pregnant people are prioritized), and/or you can explore care with a home birth midwife.

  1. Online at www.mybenefits.hawaii.gov.
  2. Over the phone at 1-877-628-5076.
  3. By mail delivered to Med-QUEST Division Eligibility Offices [/box]

DUAL CARE - Choosing a HOME BIRTH & continuing OB/GYN Care

Kaiser if you have Kaiser insurance, they cannot deny you care if you choose to birth at home, though they are likely to recommend against it.

Malama I Ke Ola Health CentER If you choose to birth at home, they will deny you any prenatal or postpartum care and may refuse you as a patient for subsequent pregnancies, even if you are choosing to birth at the hospital in a subsequent pregnancy.

Maui Lani Physicians & Surgeons If you choose to birth at home, they will see you until 29 weeks in pregnancy. If you do not tell them of your plans to birth at home and continue care until you have your baby, they will no longer see you as patient henceforth.
